Canadian War Museum

The New Canadian War Museum, located in Ottawa’s Lebreton flats just east of the downtown core, is a reinforced concrete structure with a structural steel roof at the east end. The structure, 250 meters long and 120 meters wide, is 2 levels on the east side and 4 levels on the west side. The maximum height for the building, 24.5m, is at the Regeneration hall at the north east corner. Due to its size, the building is separated by four expansion joints to create five separate building structures.

A portion of the reinforced concrete structure included up to 15% fly ash to reduce its environmental impact. Construction began in late 2002 and progressed over the next 2 years. The museum is truly unique with its complexity and detailing such as the multitude of sloping architecturally exposed reinforced concrete walls. The exhibition space alone exceeds 5700 square meters.

The Museum includes exhibitions areas, ateliers, library, classrooms, theatre, cafeteria, art gallery, environmentally controlled storage areas, artifact restoration facilities.
